Just like so many other gluten free individuals, I am going dairy free, and meat free (*gasp* for those of you who know me; but don't worry, I don't think it's a permanent change) for a bit to balance out my lovely digestive system, actually I want to see if it's part of my one issue that has not cleared up yet. Even though all of us gluten-intolerant people could hold our own in the nursing home discussion of exit strategies; I will not share mine here. ;)
I wanted a popcorn snack, but I am a die hard butter and salt girl, but my resolution to stay dairy free is a firm one, so I put this together.
I ate this and immediately I wanted to make another batch. If I do go back to dairy, I will be hard pressed to decide which way I want my popcorn!! Experiment and see what you come up with...
Sweet and Spicy Popcorn
(I pop my popcorn the Alton Brown way: paper bag, 1/3 cup corn, fold down edge, put in 2 staples, pop as long as your microwave needs. Mine is 2 minutes and 30 seconds.)
Sprinkle olive oil, granulated garlic, sugar, kosher salt, and cayenne pepper (I think a smoky chipotle powder would be to-die-for, but I didn't have any.) over popped popcorn.
Mix together.
Eat. And you won't miss the butter.
Cheers!!

I've just discovered olive oil on popcorn also! Is it delish for sure! I'll have to try the cayenne and garlic out, I've only been doing salt and oil so far.
I'm gluten and casein free also. Dairy is not my friend, in fact it bothers me as much as the gluten I think, at least as far as symptoms afterward go. I tend to cheat on that one but never with gluten (on purpose anyhow), so I well know how I feel afterwards.
I like your blog!!
Hi there you have a lovely blog. Popcorn is great snack your version looks really tasty.
I have some gluten free recipes on my blog here is a link if you want to check it out gluten free recipes
Let me know if you would like to exchange links. Great blog.
Thanks Jeena :-)
Cool recipe. I had no idea that you could put metal staples into a microwave and not have them explode! :P
that sounds wonderful!! I LOVE me some popcorn! i never would have thought to use olive oil! What a grand idea! I'm checking that out one night this week!!
Yvonne ~ Thanks! I am so glad you took time to comment. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the olive oil on popcorn. Honestly, when I made this I thought that was no way I could enjoy it! Was I surprised! I might be a lucky one, it seems going off dairy might not be necessary for me, but cutting it out is teaching me how to use it in moderation, which I believe is a good thing.
Jeena ~ Popcorn is one of the best! Funny how I go in stretches and forget about it. I will definitely check out your blog, I am trying to limit my blogging time, so I will get to it when I can! :)
~m ~ I didn't either! And it works great. For some reason, you can only use 2, I don't know if Alton Brown has the science behind it online, but his cookbooks are fascinating.
Carrie ~ Let me know what you think about the olive oil. I was shocked how good it was. I thought nothing could replace butter. I hoep you diet change is going well for you!
I am a popcorn addict and recently tried it without butter and just added extra olive oil in the pan. It took a lot longer to pop than it did with the bare minimum of oil, but it tasted great and I did not miss the butter! I just add my Greek seasoning (it must have lots of garlic in it) and nutrient yeast (gives it that cheesiness without cheese). I buy the nutrient yeast out of the bulk containers at the health food store with no issues.
Celticjig ~ Great idea with the nutritional yeast.
I have always liked my popcorn popped dry; my Dad used to shake a campfire type popcorn popper over our gas stove flame when I was a child and never used oil. It's one of those things I just grew up with. :)
But good to know for those who want to pop with olive oil!
If I use staples in my microwave the paper bag catches on fire. You can't put metal in a microwave.
